The finalists continue to receive praise for sailing through to the last hour of the 90-day competition. The housemates arrived in Lagos form South Africa on Tuesday, August 27, not without a truckload of controversy trailing their participation at the eight season of the reality TV show which viewership and budget is unmatched by any other reality show on African soil.
Twenty eight housemates from 14 countries sequestered for 90 days in the House and cut off from communication with the outside world; they were left to their own devices guided by House rules and standards.
Romances blossomed, fights broke out (missing fistcuffs) and sex happened in the three months span. 21-year-old undergraduate Beverly threw herself in the eye of the storm back at home for her full-frontal sexual romps with Angelo, the South African housemate (evicted two weeks before the finale). Interestingly, the video vixen and aspiring actress set a new record while in the House as the first housemate in the history of Big Brother never to be nominated for eviction!
Melvin, on the other hand, had a clean slate and was saved from eviction by Africa voters who kept him in the competition. Thus, on Sunday, August 25, when the Big Brother Africa The Chase finale show was broadcast live, the two Nigerians were among the five finalists; others being Clementina ‘Cleo’ Mulenga (Zambia), Dillish Pearl Mathews (Namibia), and Elikem Kumordzi (Ghana).
Dillish eventually garnered the required number of votes from Africa which sealed her victory as the housemate to take home the mouth-watering prize money of $300,000 and other endorsement deals.
A night before the finale though, on-going vote polls released showed Melvin in a clear lead with 48%, 62 votes to closest rival Dillish’s 24%, 31 votes. Beverly accounted for 13%, 17 votes; Cleo 12%, 15 votes and Elikem 5%, 7 votes.
However, the expectation that Nigeria could be on her way to a record-setting fourth win in the competition was shattered when Melvin became the second of the five to be evicted at the finale show. Addressing questions if he believed he had been cheated out of the grand prize, 27-year old Melvin stated that: “I don’t believe I was cheated.
Other countries may have felt West Africans were dominating the game. Among the final five were three West Africans and probably the rest of Africa decided to go with other countries instead of Ghana or Nigeria which had won more than any other country in the competition”. Beverly who arrived the country hobbling on one leg as a result of an ankle injury was confronted at the media reception whether she had sex with Angelo as depicted in a video which went viral online.
“Let me state categorically that I did not have sex in the house. I have a relationship with Angelo but I didn’t have sex”, she said with finality. Present at the reception was the General Manager, Airtel Mr. Obinna Aniche who saluted the courage of the contestants for enduring the rigours of the Big Brother House for 90 days.
He also commended them for making the nation proud. In his remarks, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd., Mr. Martin Mabuto said “I have worked on the show since inception; in my own view, this was one of the hotly contested Big Brother ever. I have to say to the two finalists that they did a good job of winning people over and coming out to still keep their heads high up. I am very proud of how they represented themselves and the country”.
He continued: “From the MultiChoice point of view the show was immaculately broadcast to Africa and we had millions of people tuning in. From an interactive perspective, we had record-breaking Twitter, Facebook and social media interactions. Our digital online downloads were also record breaking. The show continues to grow each year”
